President Jokowi Invites World Bank President for Stunting Handling Observation in Bogor
Jakarta - President Joko Widodo and World Bank President Jim Yong Kim did the president’s signature impromptu visit or blusukan to Tangkil Village, Caringin District, Bogor Regency, on Wednesday afternoon (4/7).
In this village, both leaders directly observed Indonesia’s handling of stunting problems (children growth disorder). They saw activities held by local integrated health service post or Posyandu, such as providing additional foods made from local ingredients and giving counseling on Early Childhood Education or PAUD.
Pregnant women who were present in the event ate green bean porridge, boiled eggs and Kristal cashews, while toddlers and PAUD students are green bean porridge, boiled eggs and bananas.
“We have carried out stunting reduction programs by giving additional foods and doing public campaigns via Posyandu. We hope these will really decrease stunting problems in our country, not only in Bogor Regency, but also in other regencies or provinces,” President Jokowi said as stated in a press release by the Deputy of Protocol, Press and Media Unit of the Presidential Secretariat on Wednesday (4/7).
On the other hand, the President stressed the efforts were insufficient if other actions were absent. The government thus considers other attempts, such as utilizing latest technology and embracing private sector.
“We want to use technology, involve private sector, utilize new innovations and work with Islam mass organizations and those of other religions to quickly reduce stunting problems,” he said.
This time around, the State Head intentionally invited the World Bank President in his blusukan to have directly seen how the Indonesian government has handled stunting problems which commonly happen in developing countries.
“Why did we invite the World Bank President? Because they have a lot of and extensive experiences in other nations. We hope we can discuss about this with World Bank,” he said.
In that occasion, President Jokowi and Jim Yong Kim greeted all mothers who were attending the event to have their children health checked. The two also distributed a number of notebooks for the kids and tasted additional foods for children nutrient boost.
During the monitoring, the President was accompanied by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, Health Minister Nila F. Moeloek, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati and Minister for Education and Culture Muhadjir Effendy.
Stunting problems become the focus of World Bank because this influences economic condition of a nation. A country with stunted human resources may have low productivity level. According to the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Panjaitan, World Bank will grant US$400 million to overcome stunting problems in Indonesia.
World Bank President Jim Yong Kim arrived in Indonesia on Wednesday and will visit some regions in relation to stunting issues and preparations of Annual Meetings of IMF-World Bank Group 2018 in Bali, October this year.
